Swire National Oceanography Centre Ocean monitoring systems (SNOMS)
The Swire Group Charitable Trust has donated £100,000 to sponsor a research project being carried out by the UK’s National Oceanographic Centre, based at Southampton University. The research aims to establish the role that the ocean plays in reducing the rate of global warming by absorbing carbon dioxide (CO2). At present, 30-50% of carbon dioxide generated by man is taken up by the oceans each year. Data is required in order to establish where and how this is happening, so that scientists can better predict the likely progress of climate change. During June this year instruments were installed on Pacific Celebes, which operates within a round the world service and travels through some of the world’s most remote marine environments. It is anticipated that the data gathered will provide an insight into the levels of carbon absorption in the ocean. The National Oceanographic Centre will be publishing live data at www.noc.soton.ac.uk/snoms
